BOJ Conducts Emergency Bond Buying To Underpin Debt Market, But Yields Keep Rising

TOKYO, Oct 20 (Reuters) – The Bank of Japan on Thursday conducted emergency bond-buying operations, extending efforts to put a floor under bond prices, as the yen nears a 32-year-low against the dollar.

The BOJ offered to buy some 250 billion yen ($1.67 billion)of government bonds with maturities from 5- to longer than 25 years. But its effect was limited as yields only kept rising, sending the 5- and 20-year bond yields to their highest levels since 2015.

China Holds Emergency Talks With Chip Firms After U.S. Curbs – Bloomberg News

Oct 20 (Reuters) – China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology convened a series of emergency meetings over the past week with leading semiconductor companies, seeking to assess the damage from the U.S. chip restrictions, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The ministry summoned executives from firms including Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) and supercomputer specialist Dawning Information Industry Co (603019.SS) to attend closed-door meetings, the report said.

India Regulator Fines MakeMyTrip, Oyo For Anti-Competitive Conduct

BENGALURU, Oct 20 (Reuters) – India’s competition regulator said on Wednesday that it had fined online hotel-booking companies MakeMyTrip Ltd (MMYT.O) and Goibibo and IPO-bound hotel chain Oyo a combined $47 million for anti-competitive behaviour.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been investigating the companies since 2019 following allegations by a hotel body that MakeMyTrip gave special treatment to SoftBank-backed (9984.T) Oyo on its platform.

Oil Prices Rise On Possible Easing In China COVID Quarantine Measure

SINGAPORE, Oct 20 (Reuters) – Oil prices gained around $1 on Thursday as investor sentiment rose on news that China is considering a cut in the duration of quarantine for inbound visitors.

Brent crude futures for December settlement rose 80 cents, or 0.9%, to $93.21 a barrel at 0610 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery (WTI) , which expires on Thursday, rose $1.29, or 1.5%, to $86.84 per barrel. The WTI contract for December delivery was last up 1.4%, or $1.16 cents, at $85.68 a barrel.
